Meet the Farmers: The Hernandez Family

At Tz'ikin Cafe, we believe that knowing the people behind your coffee enhances the experience of every cup. Today, we're proud to introduce you to the Hernandez family, third-generation coffee farmers from the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala who have been our partners since 2023.

A Family Legacy

The Hernandez family's coffee journey began in 1945 when Antonio Hernandez purchased a small plot of land at 1,800 meters above sea level in the highlands of Huehuetenango. What started as a 2-hectare farm has grown to 15 hectares today, now managed by Antonio's grandson, Miguel, along with his wife Elena and their three children.

"Coffee is in our blood," Miguel told us during our visit earlier this year. "My grandfather taught my father, who taught me. Now I'm teaching my children. Each generation has added something new while respecting the traditions that make our coffee special."

The Farm: Finca El Mirador

Finca El Mirador (The Viewpoint Farm) is aptly named for its stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The farm sits at elevations between 1,700 and 1,900 meters, creating ideal conditions for slow-maturing coffee cherries that develop complex flavors.

The Hernandez family primarily grows Bourbon and Caturra varieties, though they've recently begun experimenting with Gesha on a small section of the farm. The coffee is shade-grown under native trees that also provide habitat for local birds and wildlife.

Sustainable Practices

Environmental stewardship is central to the Hernandez family's farming philosophy. They use organic composting methods, minimize water usage through efficient processing, and maintain buffer zones of native vegetation to protect local watersheds.

"We see ourselves as caretakers of this land," Elena explained. "We want to pass it to our children in better condition than we received it."

The family has also implemented a water recycling system for their wet mill and uses the coffee pulp as compost, creating a nearly zero-waste operation.

Community Impact

Beyond their own farm, the Hernandez family plays an active role in their local community. They employ 25 permanent workers and up to 60 seasonal workers during harvest, providing fair wages and good working conditions.

They've also established a small school on their property where workers' children can receive education during the harvest season, ensuring that education continues even when families are working away from their home villages.

The Coffee

The coffee from Finca El Mirador is truly exceptional, with tasting notes of chocolate, caramel, and red apple, with a pleasant acidity and a smooth, clean finish. It's become a favorite among our customers, particularly as a pour-over that highlights its complex flavor profile.

Our direct relationship with the Hernandez family allows us to pay well above commodity prices for their coffee, ensuring they can continue their sustainable practices while providing for their family and community.

Visit Us to Taste Their Coffee

We're currently featuring the Hernandez family's coffee as our single-origin Guatemalan option. Stop by any of our locations to try it as a pour-over or pick up a bag to brew at home.

Next month, Miguel Hernandez will be visiting us for a special event where you can meet him in person and learn more about his family's coffee journey. Join us on June 20, 2025, from 2-4 PM for a tasting and discussion. Tickets are available on our website, with all proceeds going to support the school on Finca El Mirador.
